Care personally. Challenge directly.
Nagesh Sharma introduces the “Scrum Master's Compass” — a simple way for Scrum Masters to navigate difficult team conversations by balancing two axes: how much you Care Personally, and how directly you Challenge. Operating with high care and high challenge together produces what Kim Scott calls Radical Candor.
Nagesh contrasts this with the dysfunctions that show up when the two axes are out of balance: ruinous empathy, manipulative insincerity, and obnoxious aggression. He connects this back to Scrum's core values — courage, focus, commitment, respect, and openness — and shows how events like the Sprint Retrospective naturally create space for teams to build an environment of Radical Candor.
